(I'm unsure if this can go here, so please inform me if it doesn't. I'm new around these parts )
For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been a strange kid.
Ever since the whole thing with that stupid game with those fucking animatronics in it and that one with the creepy furby, I’ve been a lot more paranoid in the dark than I already was.
My own fault really.
It wasn’t so bad, when I was young. The early 2000’s might be notorious for screwing up brains in a child, but that didn’t mean it wasn’t easier to live that way. It was simple.
You were a kid, most likely your parents are in the bedroom beside you. They’d tuck you in, kiss you goodnight, the whole shebang and then, they would leave your door open just a crack, to hear you if something happened obviously.
But I bet most kids didn’t see ghosts come though every night like me, I’m sure.
At first, they didn’t scare me. I had a wild imagination, so I got used to it pretty much.
I would see a lot of things at that age. I see ghosts of mice roaming the halls of my house. I would hear the barks of one of my dogs that had died. He wasn’t around for very long and I would feel something touching me, stroking my back. For some reason or another, I always felt it was a boy. Not sure of his intentions though.
But, nevertheless, despite all of this, I kept my door open. Then, I watched ‘Futurama’.
It was on accident of course. Being it was Halloween night where I lived when it happened, nothing was really on TV, but there wasn’t any trick or treating, so TV it was. As soon as that asshole of a robot turned into a car, I started screaming. Took me a week to get over seeing it replay in my head, thinking it might happen to me.
This made me close my door to my room and it’s stayed that way since. I haven’t been bothered since that night. Well…until now that is.
I still keep my door closed, but most of them have followed me into my new house, even though I’m almost 21 now.
I greet them like old friends. Except one. Truth is, I’ve never seen him before till now. You can always find him.
He stands in my hallway, glowing red eyes piercing from the dark. Then, every night, he waits. He waits for me to go to bed.
He comes in despite the door being closed, not sure how, leans over me and stares at my eyes. Then he lunges and disappears into thin air.
I don’t really want to know why he does what he does, but one thing is for certain. I will never turn out all the lights because of him.
I'm not sure if I may wake up again if I do.
