I love the paranormal. I can be quite skeptical, but I enjoy a good haunting or two. My sister is more religious than I am, but she does not buy into the same ghostly fantasies I do. By this time, however, neither of us had truly encountered anything incredibly out of the ordinary.
The night was black and had been long for both of us. My sister is two years younger than I and it was her first year cheering for the high school I had, by this point, been attending for three years.
It was the middle of winter—or California’s sad excuse for winter. There were a few weeks left until Christmas break, and my sister was well into her cheerleading endeavors. I am no where near as outgoing or social as she is, but my boyfriend at the time had talked me into attending at least one football game with him that season. After a late night of watching a particularly uninteresting game, my sister and I had loaded into my little ’03 silver Jetta and ventured home.
We had only been driving for about ten minutes. In that time, our only conversation consisted of the rather ‘riveting’ story I had shared with her about the new crucifix necklace I had found lying on the ground earlier that day that now hung on my rearview mirror. After that it was silent, until I saw her. It was an in an instant, but I noticed a dim figure standing in the middle of the unlit road. As we passed I looked into the driver side mirror—mostly in an attempt to brush off what I had seen—and there was the face of what appeared to be a terrified young girl. The reflection was gone almost as quickly as it had appeared. I had decided I was only imagining things, until my sister spoke up.
“Did you see that?”
I remember her hesitation as clear as if she was saying it to me now. She proceeded to describe the girl as best she could in her startled state. I felt goose bumps covering my arms and neck as I nodded in response, shocked by the sudden realization that what I had seen could have been real.
Now perhaps I am overthinking this, perhaps it is my adamant acceptance of ghosts as entities that live among us, but I had never truly believed that I would, could, encounter the paranormal personally. I have no further explanation as to whom, or what the distressed, feminine looking figure truly was. However, I cannot offer an alternate explanation for why both my sister and I had witnessed the exact same thing that night.
