So this encounter happened sometime last year, September-ish. My fiancée and I were taking the bus to go to the mall in the next area over, which is about 20 minutes away by car, about an hour by bus. Not that we mind; we love the long rides, especially since the bus that takes us is usually a double-decker.
But anyways. It started while we were waiting at the stop, and there's this overly-preachy religious dude chatting up this guy who clearly isn't into it. We mind our own business, and when the bus comes, we head upstairs. The guy who was getting his ear talked off soon comes upstairs as well, and after a while, we all laugh, because who hasn't been stuck in that situation?
So the guy's making small talk with us; about work, school, the recent Pride festivities, etc. He's like in his 30s and seems friendly enough. About 10 minutes later, he mentions his stop's coming up. We say bye and he heads back downstairs. So we're on the bus for another 20 minutes, and to our dismay, we find out that our bus is taking a detour because of construction work. Unfortunately, we didn't know the area well enough to figure out another bus route to get us to the mall, so we decided to just take this bus all the way back around to our original stop.
We're disappointed, but we listen to music and talk the long way back. It's getting later in the afternoon, and wouldn't you know it, we happen back upon the stop where the dude in his 30s got off. So he gets on the bus and heads up the stairs and doesn't notice us immediately. It's not like we were gonna initiate conversation with him--he was friendly, but just some random guy. At some point he does turn around and is surprised to see us again. We greet him again and explain what happened, and he decides he wants small-talk again. Only this time, our conversation somehow leads to video games. And out of nowhere, he tries inviting us to his place for dinner. We politely decline, because we literally just met this man, and he actually looks hurt when we tell him why. He says something like, "I'm not some weirdo," and then actually starts trying to bribe us with video games. He says the only game he's ever played was the Super Nintendo, and says if we go to his place for dinner, he'll buy a fucking Xbox 360 for us to play over there.
At this point, I can tell my fiancée is getting nervous because she completely stopped talking, so I do my best to keep turning him down without offending him. And he absolutely would not drop it. He mentioned that he lived in the area we were driving past, and that he promised he'd buy us this game and that game if we'd just go to his place for dinner and shit. Ironically enough, when I told him no again, he didn't get off the bus for his supposed stop. He just kept trying to convince us, and every time I declined, he would have this genuinely distraught face that was really freaking me out.
So thank god, our stop is finally coming up. I tell him this, and he offers for the millionth time to buy us an Xbox 360 if we'll just have dinner with him, because apparently it's his stop, too. I tell him no again, amazingly keeping up my polite performance (mainly because I've found being firm but nice is the easiest way for people not to respond to me in a rude manner) and the fiancée and I get off the bus. She's still visibly shaken from this creep so I check behind us as we're walking to our next bus to make sure he's not following us, and the guy didn't even get off!
I reassured her of this, but we were both paranoid enough to not take that bus again for about a month. Like, I love the bus, but I think that was probably the last time I made small-talk with other people riding.
A place to share scary/creepy real life encounters.
