A really long time ago, when I was probably around 10 or 11, I had a completely normal day like countless other children probably did. A perfectly normal day .... and then a perfectly normal evening... and then I went to bed.
Nothing else was normal after that.
I soon find myself awake, standing by my bed awkwardly. At first I was confused, but then a familiar sensation swept over me - I knew I was dreaming. Like few others, I have always had the ability to become aware that I was dreaming, while also having the ability to control my dreams (although very interesting, it unfortunately led me to suffer from lucid dreaming, making me feel like I didn't even sleep some nights). This ability usually caused my dreams to feel hyperrealistic, depending on how aware I was of my subconscious state. In this current dream, I had already hardly felt a difference to real life. I could see it was still night time, the moonlight shining through my window exactly how it had before I fell asleep. As I stood, I even felt the familiar fluffy carpet floor under my feet. I glanced at my bed next to me, then gradually looked around my room until my eyes settled on my bedroom door. That's when I heard the noise.
Something was downstairs and I could hear it shuffling around. Curious and bored, I opened my bedroom door to investigate. My hallway was dark and quiet, soft snores coming from my brother and parents bedrooms. If they were all asleep, that meant I might not know who was downstairs... I peeked my head out of my bedroom a little more.
The steps leading downstairs were to the left of my bedroom - the hallway was a small square area, rather than a long narrow pathway, so I was only a few feet away from the steps. Peering around the corner, I could hear more shuffling around downstairs.. then what sounded like, clicking. Popping. Like someone cracking their knuckles. I stepped out into the hall to get closer to the steps, hardly moving forward but just enough to get a closer look - I froze.
A shadow of a hunched skeletal body was visible on the wall, cast by a figure that was standing in the light of my foyer. Riddled with fear and an overwhelming sense that I was in the presence of evil, I moved slightly wanting to retreat to my bedroom. I regretted this instantly as the movement caused my weight to shift, making the floor underneath me creak loudly - the shadow of the skeleton's head snapped to look in my direction. Instantly I heard the sound of bone hitting wood as it ran up the stairs. I turned around rushing back into my room, the running growing louder and the sounds of bone snapping - it was only a few steps but it felt like miles - I heard a step directly behind me as I barely entered my bedroom. Grabbing my doorknob and squeezing my eyes shut I turned around and slammed the door shut. What should have been relief soon became panic as I realized the door hadn't fully closed. I knew something was blocking it, I knew I didn't want to see what was there. I tried to force myself awake like I'd always been able to - I opened my eyes willing to be awake, but failed. There, forcing the door to stay open, was a skeletal hand, bits of rotting flesh hanging off, forcing its way in. I'm pushing with all my might to shut the door, at the same time trying to force myself awake to get away from this horror, it wasn't working. I start to smell this horrid stench of rot and decay, and I could hear heavy wheezing on the other side of the door. As a young girl my mind didn't know how to handle the chance of seeing something that came with such a disgusting smell, or whatever was attached to this hand (which now began to show insects hidden under it's flesh, they started dropping into my bedroom). I knew that I didn't want to see whatever was behind this door so I willed with all my might to wake up -
I did wake up, for a split second anyway. I saw my ceiling and felt the sensation of lying in bed, but the minute I blinked, my body dove back into another nightmare.
I told myself I was still awake as I still felt the sensation of lying in bed. But this time, when I looked up I didn't see the ceiling, I saw nothing.
Darkness. The familiarity of being in a dream swept over me again...
I tried to remain calm and let my eyes adjust - I knew I was definitely still lying on my bed. Slowly, I realized the darkness above me was actually just my blankets covering my face. As I became more familiar with my surroundings, again I felt I was in the presence of something evil. Suddenly, two things happened at once: I smelt that horrible stench of rotting flesh so strongly it burnt my nose, and out of no where I felt suffocated, like someone just set 100 pounds on my chest. I shook in panic and fear, too distracted with my attempts to breath to wake myself up. It felt like someone was lying on top of me, crushing me with their weight- then I heard the wheezing again. That sick breath. It was just above my head, only the blanket separating me and the source of the smell.. that thing was back. It never left. It was on me. I could barely breath, that thing pushed down as hard as it could and as I opened my eyes gasping for air, I saw yellow eyes glowing through the blanket that covered my head. It spoke.
I see you.
Then I was awake. Staring at my ceiling, I forced my eyes to stay open and didn't even let myself blink. I was only a child, what I had experienced terrified me like no other nightmare had. It was the first time I wasn't able to control a dream (Over time, I realized I couldn't control my nightmares at all or rarely).
What terrified me more, as I lay awake the rest of that night, was the overwhelming feeling of being watched ... and the faint, lingering smell of rotting flesh.
