I had to walk my paper round today. Well, it wasn’t really a paper round, more like an “advertisement flyers” round, I live in The Netherlands so I don’t know what it’s called in America. Anyway, I had work to do, and I was walking in the neighborhood I had to deliver the flyers to. While walking, I noticed this dude standing on the other side of the street and he was looking at me. I stopped, pretended to be counting my flyers and I noticed he kept staring at me.
Wait, let me describe him first. He was like thirty, forty years old and was wearing a bright red coat. He was wearing a black baseball cap and had a huge moustache. He freaked me out, a lot. And I’m not really an attractive dude or anything, so he wasn’t just checking me out.
I decided to ignore him and just do my job, I’d been messing up lately and I wanted to do it right this time, I didn’t want to get fired. After my first street, I noticed him leaving the grocery store. He didn’t have a bag or anything and I’m pretty sure he hadn’t bought anything.
Just leave it, Cameron, I told myself. You’re overreacting, the man just wanted to buy his favorite cereal and they didn’t have it anymore.
Later I stood there with my bike and I was putting some new flyers in my bag, so I could walk the last two streets and go home. I saw his bright red coat in the corner of my eye. He was coming towards me, and fast. I managed to stay pretty calm. I mean, I panicked more when I had my Physics final (I didn’t fail, luckily). He walked past me, but he looked at me. Quickly, but long enough for me to notice. I swallowed heavily and walked away.
I’d done some houses when I noticed him again. This time he was walking behind me. He was gone, right? Did he really just turn around with no reason? From that point I was convinced he was stalking me and now I was panicking. The street I was walking in was pretty much empty and it was quiet, almost eerie quiet, and it also happened to be one of the more dangerous streets of the area.
I just kept walking. I skipped houses, I told myself I’d come back later, but now I just had to walk and I had to find other people, so I could feel safe again. And yeah, I was scared now. Even more scared than when I had my Physics final. I quickly looked over my shoulder, but the man was still there. I kept walking and walking and it was like the street had only become longer. I started to walk faster, but the man did exactly the same thing. That’s when I started running and immediately tripped over my own feet.
I hit the ground hard, but managed to catch myself with my hands. I honestly thought it was going to be my death.
‘Hey, are you okay?’
It was a female voice. I jumped on my feet and turned around. A woman was walking towards me, she looked worried. She didn’t look like the man at all, so I couldn’t have mistaken her for him. The man himself was gone. As if he’d never been there.
I could’ve been hallucinating. I mean, last time something like that happened was when I was seven years old and extremely ill, but it could’ve been a hallucination. All I know is that I didn’t finish my paper round and I’m just hoping I’m not getting fired.
