Last Night Freaked Me Out

I want to write this down whilst it's fresh in my mind, I'm not sure if what happened last night counts as a glitch but it really freaked me out.

So I was lying in bed trying to sleep and when I last checked my phone it was roughly 5am (admittedly my sleeping schedule is kind of fucked). I kept tossing and turning and couldn't settle, which isn't that unusual for me, but then at what I think was about half 5 I was lying on my side with my eyes closed trying to sleep but then I hear this booming sound and feel the slightest tremor. The only way I can think to describe it is that it was as if a giant had just stomped his foot outside my window. Simultaneously, a light seemed to quickly flash in front of my closed eyes. I bolt upright thinking what the hell, and after checking my phone it was half 6 in the morning. I know that maybe I just dozed off and what I saw, felt and heard was probably just part of some dream but I swear I was wide awake and was trying to sleep rather than actually sleeping when it happened; so did I lose that hour? What caused the noise/tremor/light?

Additionally, for the next ten or so minutes my heart was pounding and I had a sensation like the silence was too loud in my ears. I'm aware of how weird that sounds, I promise I don't do and never have done drugs, I'm just describing what I felt.

Maybe I'm freaking out over nothing, but has anyone else experienced anything similar?

I've experienced this quite often, especially when stressed out/not sleeping well. It's called Exploding Head Syndrome, and is actually pretty common. No one is quite sure what causes it, but it seems like it's some kind of micro seizure in the brain induced by exhaustion, which causes you to hallucinate a loud sound (an explosion, a gunshot, a scream, etc) along with a jolt of adrenaline/fear and sometimes bright flashes as well. It happens most often at night or when trying to sleep and is similar to that falling/jerking sensation that startles you awake as you fall asleep.

So it's mysterious and not entirely figured out, but it is a pretty common thing that I experience quite often. Look up Exploding Head Syndrome for more information.

I can't believe it's so long since I've been on this website and that there's a rational explanation for what happened to me that night! I've fortunately not had anything as terrifying as that since, but after looking it up I think you're right. I used to really often hear someone shouting my name somehow both inside and outside my head simultaneously, and thinking back on it it was only when i was exhausted plus I have general anxiety so I'm always stressed. Dunno if that counts but it's super interesting :)
