Hi everyone, Dovah here.
I've been reading through glitch in the matrix stories for ages now and I very often see many recurring themes. Usually involving losing time or deja vu and other things like that. Avid readers of GitM stories will know what sorts of recurring themes I'm talking about.
I first want to say that I'm not trying to discredit anyone. At all. I completely believe that these things have happened to you and I can understand your terror, because it truly is terrifying. I know because I suffer from a dissociative disorder.
Dissociative disorders are usually characterized by not feeling real, your surroundings not feeling real, losing time, feeling like things are happening in a dream or feeling like you are having deja vu...all the time. Basically, people such as myself who suffer from dissociative disorders feel like they're always experiencing a glitch in the matrix.
The thing is? Normal people without diagnosed dissociative disorders can experience dissociation too. Ever been driving in your car to work or school and spaced out but still ended up at school/work, as if your brain was on autopilot? That's dissociation. Those of you who have been in car crashes will likely report that it seemed like everything was in slow motion as it was all happening. As if two seconds had spread out to twenty minutes. That's dissociation. It is very real and can be very scary at times. I'm going to share some of my dissociative experiences and maybe it will help to explain some of these recurring glitch in the matrix themes.
-Many many many times I have sat down, looked at the clock, blinked, and anywhere from one to seven hours have passed.
-I've lost an entire day before. I've been completely positive that it was April 5th when it was definitely April 6th.
-I have blinked and seen people disappear before my very eyes. This is likely a mini-version of losing time, in which I likely just lose about a minute. Enough time for someone to walk away and around a corner and for me to think they've disappeared before my eyes.
-I've been driving and ended up on the complete opposite end of town in an area I've never been in before in what seemed like only a moment.
-I've felt like I'm walking in a dream and "walked through walls", when in reality, I'm just walking through a doorway that my brain turned into what looked to be a solid wall.
-I've forgotten how to write for three days straight.
-I've forgotten simply how to speak for hours on end.
-I've even forgotten my own name before
-Sometimes when you dissociate, you'll even fabricate false memories of things that seem completely real. (Like those stories where you have a childhood friend that never existed, or you are certain a family member has died even thought they're fine) I once was absolutely certain my sister went through a sleep study and was diagnosed with sleep apnea, but she never was. We can't even afford for her to go to a sleep study.
There are quite a few other things that have happened (I've been suffering from this disorder for years). These are the most common ones that happen.
Again, I'm not trying to discredit those who have gone through some truly terrifying moments that seem like glitches in the matrix. But sometimes our brains just spazz for a moment and do weird things that seem like the entire world is off-kilter. And yes, these moments are scary. But you can get through them.
Cheers. If you have any questions, just ask!
A glitch in the matrix is an experience that proves something isn’t right in the world or sometimes your brain.
