Located East of Australia in the Fiji Islands is a village where cannibalism was not only practiced, but the site of a grisly murder. Fijans picked up cannibalism out of desperation during their long journey at sea. By the time they landed on the island it became a normal part of their diet. A high population added to the competition for natural resources only made this practice even more necessary to avoid starvation.
During the mid to late 1800's Christian missionaries often ventured to the islands in hopes of converting the residents. it was in July of 1867 that Reverend Thomas Baker and six others were hacked to death with an axe and eaten. Everything was eaten except for their boots, which proved too tough to chew. This marked the last known cannibal act documented or known in Fiji. It also brought with it stories of hauntings in and around the historical site where Baker and his followers met their bloody end. Many villagers even believed they were cursed due to their ancestor's cannibalistic act. Three of the chiefs' sons died mysteriously shortly after Baker was killed. Even years later in this community, which is located in the inland mountains on the main Fiji island, is deprived of the lush vegetation that dominants the rest of the region. The village struggles with finding food and lacks many modern facilities such as schools, hospitals, and even roads. Entire family lines have died out in the aftermath as well, leaving many believe this is all related to the curse.
In 2006 a ceremony was held to make amends to the descendants of the Reverend Thomas Baker. They returned the last remaining items they had of his, which were the soles of his boots and a comb. This area of the village is no longer in use and now hosts a memorial for the victims.
As for the hauntings, which were investigated by Josh Gates on Destination Truth, some of the claims are of hearing crying, screams, and sitings of transparent apparitions. Josh and his team reported hearing noises and saw an unexplained light in a cave that had an oven that was used to cook the victims. The crew from this show also recorded EVPs of a scream and a voice in the area where Reverend Baker lost his life near the present day village of Nabutautau. They even recorded pictures of a substance that resembled blood. Tests on the substance concluded that it was, in fact, blood. Many crew members reported being touched throughout the investigation as well.
