There was a little wooden house down the block from where we lived, and it always had a for rent sign. Though they’d take it down occasionally, it wasn’t lived in for a long time. When it was empty my sister and I would sneak in and sit upstairs, imagining where we’d put our furniture. Once, when the landlords kids were there sprucing it up, me, the kid (who was about two at the time) and my then boyfriend visited and asked about the rent, and the history. The owners were completely charmed by my kid, who picked up a paint roller and offered to help them paint. Even though we had to make payments on the deposit (and other folks were offering the money right then and there) the landlord decided he liked us, and we moved in shortly thereafter. He told us that the house was originally a barn, built in 1926, and the farmer lived in it until his death. When we met the neighbors, they told us that on Halloween you can still hear the ghost roosters crowing. (They were snickering though- we found out later they didn’t get along with the landlord for some reason and they were never very nice after that.)
We never heard ghost roosters or cows, but on the first Halloween in the house I woke up to the sound of a horse clip clopping down the alley. Now- there is no rural area near here. The equestrian center is clear across town. But besides all that, when I got up and looked out the windows- there wasn’t a horse in sight. We could still hear the horses though.
Someone at work commented (after dropping me off late one night), that they must have been tiny- the people who built it. The ceilings and windows were very low and the shower was tucked underneath the stairs- if you were over 5′5″ you had to crouch a little. My very tall ex, and all my boyfriends after that HATED that shower. I thought it was charming.
After a few months my daughter started complaining about ‘the people who lived there’- a ‘white lady and a white man’. I asked what they look like and she said they both wore very white clothes and the man had a long white beard and the woman had very long white hair. They were very short- “Smaller than you or daddy”. She really only complained when they stood in her way though, lol. She would be sent to bed and I’d hear her on the stairs stamping her feet. “MOM!” She’d holler. Mostly it was stuff like, “the man is on the stairs and he’s WALKING TOO SLOW!” and “Do you mind I’m trying to POTTY!” She never seemed afraid of them, and we enjoyed telling people we lived in a haunted house.
When her dad and I split up, he took one bedroom and me and my kid slept in the other one. He started asking me to stop looking in on him when he slept. When I questioned him about this he would say that he kept waking up in the middle of the night, and see me standing at his door in a long white nightgown. I don’t own anything like a long white nightgown and was most certainly NOT checking up on him.
Then I started hearing noises late at night, like someone was in the house or trying to break in. I’d ask my ex to look and he’d refuse, so I’d go check and never found anything suspicious once I was downstairs. After this I burned sage, copal, sweetgrass, whatever and told whomever was there that they were free to go. I said a blessing prayer for them, put salt in all the corners, everything. The noises stopped, along with the appearances of the ghost couple.
When I was promoted at the store (a small new age book shop), I had the unfortunate task of having to discipline and sometimes fire people. There was also the unpleasantness of having to ask people to leave if they got unruly or abusive with my staff. Most of the people that worked and shopped there claimed to be practitioners of magic- dark, light or otherwise. So naturally I expected a deluge of ugly energy sent my way, and they didn’t disappoint. Nightmares and sleep paralysis occurred frequently, and worse- tons of a certain kind of spider that I hate were suddenly appearing in places where those spiders don’t usually make webs? Plants died, pets died, and someone made a complaint to the city that my dog would bark all day, when she was actually inside most of the time and didn’t bark unless someone was taunting her? More cleansings, more protection spells. I did it all.
One night my daughter curled up in bed with me cause she heard noises. “I miss the old people who used to live here”. She told me. “Why’s that?” I asked.
“Cause they used to protect us.”
