On October 19th 1999, a sixteen year old boy named Jacob Hirsch killed his little sister Ann. He was never convicted because his lawyer and a psychologist convinced the jury that he was mentally ill. But, it was so obviously him.
Only Jacob had such patience. Only Jacob had such an obsessive attention to detail. Only Jacob had such a disturbed mind. Such a blatant disregard for human empathy.
I should know, I'm his older sister.
The investigators came to our parents for information but, they couldn't answer in any fashion other than crying and statements denying his involvement. Mom and Dad had found her body when they arrived home from their weekly date night. They opened the front door and saw what remained of her hanging under the ceiling fan by a noose. Even after the police removed the body, they were still in shock. It was up to me to fill in the gaps.
I remembered every incident with Jacob and I told them everything. About all the animals he had killed and hid from our parents. About all the gropes, abuse, and threats he had subjected me to. It all mattered to them.
The investigation resulted in a plethora of physical evidence. Field experts on the forensics team collected fingerprints from the knife he had used to slice Ann’s skin down to the bone. Jacob was covered in blood, Ann’s blood. When questioned, neighbors recalled hearing screams from our house. Screams that lasted for hours before his act was discovered.
He took his time torturing her. Took his time cutting into her and removing things and scraping off her flesh.
They had so many questions for me but, the one that they wanted the answer to the most was why.
Why would he inflict so much pain and brutality on an innocent life? On someone who loved him?
I answered it in eight words.
“He loved Halloween, especially those hanging skeleton decorations.”
