I haven't posted here in a long time, so here's something to break the silence. I also haven't written in a story format in maybe a year, since I've transitioned to script writing for my other projects, so we'll see how this turns out!
I’m not sure where I am. My head was throbbing, and everything hurt all over but my right side that felt cold and numb. The florescent lights overhead were blinding, and I could barely open my eyes. The room smelt unsettlingly clean and sterile. It felt like with every breath I took, a monotonous beep followed. I let out a pained groan, as I tried to sit up. I jerked my hand too fast, and felt it snag on the IV. I looked back over to my side, and slowly squint my eyes. I’m rigged up to an IV system. I use all my strength to pull myself up to sit up right. I grab my rib in pain, feeling my muscles tear.
“Fuck.” I groaned “Sam...are you okay?”
I heard the white curtains in front of me move, and a doctor in dark blue scrubs puts on some gloves.
“Good morning, Mr. Starling. I’m Doctor Way.” the doctor smiled “How are you feeling?”
“Like hell,” I winced “Where am I?”
“You’re in the hospital.” he said, checking my vitals and handing me my glasses. “You were in a really nasty accident up on I-81. You’re really lucky to be alive. It’s not everyday you see someone survive a crash like yours.”
I don’t remember a thing. I was in an accident? What the fuck?
“Is Sam okay?” I asked, my voice becoming softer.
He just gives me this look, and then ran his fingers through his dark red hair.
“I’m not sure how to tell you this, Brian.” he sighed “But your brother didn’t survive the accident. We tried everything we could, but we weren’t able to save him. I’m sorry.”
I ripped the blanket off my bed, and looked at right side. I screamed in horror to see nothing there but bloody gauze and staples on my side. Sam and I have never been apart in our lives. The doctors and physical therapists said experiencing separation anxiety is normal, but it’s been six years now and I still feel him breathing in my ear...
